Seiko Movements Hierarchy – A Reference Guide to Seiko Calibers

I often see movement numbers (calibers) and I have to google around multiple sources for the information I need. As such, I’ve compiled this handy reference guide that will tell you pertinent information.

Purpose of the Guide

This guide will allow you to quickly identify the BPH/VPH (Frequency), ticks per second, Jewels, Power Reserve, accuracy, Hacking/Hand-winding capacity, and complications of all the most-used Seiko movements. Please bookmark this page if you find it a handy reference.

I could use your help to keep growing this page!
Please leave a comment with the next caliber you would like to see!

In addition, I will include a list of some of Seiko’s most popular watches that house these movements for a comprehensive cheat sheet. You can see a few product links under these sections, which will show you the price range and product images of watches bearing those movements.

Reference Notes

Accuracy Metrics

  • Accuracy is usually given as a range in terms of +/- seconds per day. All accuracy metrics have been converted to a daily basis for apples-to-apples comparison.
  • Most of the time watches will be more accurate than the stated movement accuracy. This is because the stated movement accuracy is just the manufacturer’s minimum accuracy guarantee.
  • Salient Quotes About Caliber Accuracy
    • “Again, a caliber’s grade is strictly *not* defined by its accuracy, but by the ability to *maintain* the same level of accuracy in many years to come ” –jerouy
    • ” Accuracy is an open ended question that really has no diffinitive bedrock scale to measure against when completely new & out of the box except for the standards as published for the caliber.” –Poseidon-Jim

Complications

  • “Date” means numbered date from 1 to 31. As in “what’s today’s date?”
  • “Day” refers to “day of the week”
  • “Day-Date” complications means it has both

  1. Intriguing post. I Have Been trying to organize info about the movements, so a debt
of gratitude is in order for posting. Cool resource.

  2. The 5R65 and 5R66 do not have an accuracy of -.5/+.5. It’s +15/-15 per day. The 9R65 and 9R66 is more accurate then the mentioned above.

    1. Hi Jake – thanks for stopping by!
My research indicates that the 5R65 is a Spring Drive movement with +/15 sec per month, which I standardized into a “per day” accuracy of +/- 0.5 sec/day.
      Source: https://www.gnomonwatches.com/products/marine-master-pro-600m-springdrive-tuna-ref-sbdb013

The 9R65 is listed on the Grand Seiko site as having an accuracy of “±1 second per day / ±15 seconds per month (average)” so this is what I used.
Mathematically the accuracy is near equivalent, but the difference is in rounding error.

      Hope that clears it up!
